I met Paul several years ago whilst he worked as Commercial Director for Total Foodservice.
Having established our business supplying premium tea to independent stores we secured a contract with a national hotel group requiring products be supplied via Total Foodservice.
Once the initial distribution channel was arranged we found Paul to be extremely aware and keen to work with added value/premium products. We spent time discussing our brand values, market positioning and the various selling points of our tea which helped to sell a product which was around 15 to 30 times the cost of other teas stocked by TFS at the time. Paul was able to effectively communicate this with his team – helping them understand the key differentiation points and sell effectively.
We found Paul struck a great balance of understand our experience, knowledge and passion for tea, whilst acknowledging that we were new to wholesale distribution and supporting us with lots of help and advice. This proved invaluable at that stage and is still the basis for lots of our business decisions today.
The culture of the commercial department was excellent and we actually felt like part of the TFS team! But of course we had our own goals to achieve to make this a viable route to market. Working with Paul allowed us to the freedom to experiment in ways we couldn’t have done with him/TFS and create a strategy which worked for both parties. Something Paul was particularly keen on was the coaching and mentoring of the commercial team to thoroughly understand sales as an ongoing process, rather than just shifting boxes. For us this was vital.

I met Paul several years ago whilst he worked as Commercial Director for Total Food service and I was Director at Areolives, an importer and packer of olives, marinated vegetables and other Mediterranean delicatessen products into the UK.
We took our product to Total Foodservice as part of our strategy had been to diversify into new markets, and develop our relationships with larger foodservice wholesalers. We had been supplying our own branded product to them in small quantities for a group they serviced.
Paul had a vision for our product range and how it might fit within their product portfolio. Together we had an idea to create a brand for Total Foodservice of marinated olives and vegetables. He was enthusiastic and passionate about our product and keen to learn all aspects of the product from where it was sourced to how it was produced.
From start to finish we worked in partnership creating a product and brand which met their customer and the marketplace needs, differentiated from the competition, worked operationally and logistically for all parties and ultimately created a strategy which saw and extremely successful launch.
Having limited experience of the foodservice wholesale market and being a relatively small producer, we needed some support and advice on how to be compliant with processes and systems for Total Foodservice as they held ISO9001:200 Certification as well as a Food Wholesaler Standard and strict Health & Safety policies.

I remember meeting Paul for the first time when he interviewed me for an Internal Sales role at Total Foodservice in 2010. Since that first meeting Paul has been a constant support, mentor and inspiration to me during my career.
Paul made sure we, as a team, were clear on the Vision for the business and how we all played an important part in being successful. We felt part of a team and part of something worthwhile as we were always clear on the business strategy and the part we played.
We always knew that we had the opportunity to develop our careers under Paul’s Leadership, if we wanted. We also had confidence that we could discuss any aspect of our performance with Paul, good or bad, as his style was very approachable and solutions driven, focusing on what we wanted to achieve in terms of the company and personal goals.
This led to the team feeling like a team, all focused on the bigger picture. We were all coached and mentored in the same way & I felt privileged to be given the opportunity to develop my career under Paul’s guidance.
Paul regularly took time to support, coach and mentor me in various aspects of my role. Sometimes planned sessions and sometimes ad-hoc due to situations that occurred. On each occasion I felt comfortable discussing challenges ahead and every time the discussions focused on achieving new goals.
I progressed within the business to Area Sales Development Representative and quickly became successful with Paul’s support and coaching. I left to have my first child in July 2013.
After the birth of Ava, I wanted to return to work but on a part-time basis as I wanted to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I felt that I could be satisfied without necessarily developing my career so early after Ava had been born and put this ambition on hold for a few years. Or so I thought.
I quickly realised that I had ambitions to develop my career yet had concerns about keeping the healthy work-life balance to make sure Ava was not affected in any way. I was also unsure as to which way to go in terms of role and industry.
Having kept in touch with Paul throughout this time, I really wanted his advice and support.
For the past 2 months I have met Paul on a regular basis to discuss identifying first and then working on a plan to achieve my important goals. These were to move into a management role and within the hospitality sector.
I have now been offered the opportunity for a role which is my dream job.
Paul’s coaching sessions were inspirational. I found myself even more motivated and inspired than usual and would not have walked away with the type of plans without Paul’s support and the coaching. I strongly believed that the coaching sessions helped focus on the goals I really wanted and make them happen.
I know I will require further coaching as I take on my new role as there will be new challenges ahead.

I had no previous experience in this role at all. Paul spent time with me on my personal development supporting me in gaining new skills and knowledge I need to be successful in every aspect of my new role within the company.
